Even if you’re relatively new to cannabis—whether you’re a consumer or simply curious—you’ve likely heard of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), the two main organic compounds (called cannabinoids) found in hemp and marijuana. You might have heard a dispensary budtender explaining their differing effects. A friend could have told you about how they give their dog CBD treats for anxiety. Or maybe you did a quick Google search to be in-the-know after hearing coworkers discuss THC:CBD ratios.

And while THC and CBD have more or less become household names, one other vital cannabis component is not as familiar: Terpenes. But what are they, what do they do, and why are they important to cannabis consumption?

What are terpenes?

Found in numerous plants, terpenes are organic chemical compounds similar to flavonoids and essential oils. They contribute to a plant’s flavor, scent, and color, which is why both natural and synthetic terpenes are widely used in the fragrance and food industries. Terpenes are thus responsible for the distinct aroma of cannabis plants, as there are over 120 varieties found in hemp and marijuana.

The effects of terpenes

Terpenes target receptors throughout the body—including the same receptors that THC and CBD bind to—to produce various effects. Thus, they have been studied for their many and varied pharmacological properties. Some have been found to possess anti-inflammatory effects, while others have shown analgesicanxiolytic, or sedative activities.

Terpenes & CBD

CBD is another type of organic compound, called a cannabinoid, that is found in cannabis. Much like terpenes, CBD also has been studied for its many potential health benefits. CBD interacts with the receptors of the body’s endocannabinoid system, and is not psychoactive—meaning, it won’t make you feel “high.”

TerpFX terpene blends

Canna Hemp infuses organic cannabidiol with our proprietary TerpFX terpene blends. While some terpene-infused products replicate the terpene blends extracted from specific cannabis strains, Canna Hemp’s TerpFX products include individual terpenes chosen specifically for each formula profile: Focus, Euphoria, Calm, Relief, and Sleep. Each blend was chosen to maximize the effects of each formula created to best benefit the user.

Additionally, Canna Hemp’s TerpFX products are all-natural, contain real cannabis terpenes and are formulated without parabens, formaldehyde, petroleum, or phthalates. Canna Hemp products are also third-party lab tested for quality assurance. It is important to read labels when searching for a CBD or terpene product, as some products are made with synthetic materials and other additives with potentially undesirable effects.
